April 2017 – National Dance Institute @ Phillips Academy Andover, Dancing into the Future (DIF) Shanghai Program, Art Nest Harlem & Adopt-A-Class
National Dance Institute (NDI) program travels to Phillips Academy Andover, the staff and students there graciously hosted over 40 children from Shanghai. We participated in a community collaboration with The Boys and Girls Club in Lawrence, Massachusetts in addition to cross cultural sharing with our NDI center in Harlem, New York. What a powerful testament that the arts can unify and overcome language and economic class barriers to enrich the lives of children. Wonderful to see Philips Academy children teach Chinese children jazz and hip-hop dance and to learn traditional Chinese folk dance. The children in New York also shared their unique dance style of modern ballet, jazz and hip hop with the Chinese children and learned traditional folk dance. NDI’s program is expanding to every school district in Shanghai as part of the school’s curriculum.

Love the smiles of the NDI children!
We are thrilled to renew our adoption of a class at New York public school (PS 2) for a whole year!
NDI believes that the arts have a unique power to engage all children—despite differences in language, socio-economic background, and culture—and motivate them toward excellence. Throughout NDI’s 41 year history, NDI has successfully seeded programs both nationally and abroad. There are currently 11 NDI associate programs thriving in the United States. They have led cultural exchanges around the world in countries such as China, Russia, India, Africa, Israel, Indonesia, and Switzerland. These exchanges have enriched the lives of dancers by giving them a window into other worlds. Angel Shine’s gift supports one full year of NDI’s powerful and engaging arts program to an entire class in one of New York City’s under-resourced public schools.
